Just as Blessed to Give As to Receive

Mrs. Moss makes do on her widow's pension and Social Security. Her Detroit neighborhood has changed over the 28 years she's lived there and it doesn't seem as safe as it used to be. But at this point, where else can she live as cheaply? Thank goodness she can still drive a little, she's "blessed with some very good girlfriends who help out if I really need them," and her church is nearby. "I have great faith in God, " says Mrs. Moss, "if I didn't, I wouldn't have survived all these years."

Mrs. Moss recently received approximately $600 in a Homestead Property tax credit, plus a heating credit for about $50. As in years past, she used her largest refund to "catch up" on her gas bill. During the cold winter months she usually pays the minimum allowable to keep her house heated, and depends on her tax return to pay the balance of the bill.

"I pay a bill instead of buying something new," she says.

Mrs. Moss asked if she could pay for the help she received preparing her tax returns and credits from Accounting Aid. Learning that's  against our policy, she sent a pretty thank you card and enclosed a check for a small donation. The card's inspirational message reminded us that it's just as blessed to give as to receive.

Learning About Asset-Building Opportunities

"Accounting Aid Society helped me get extra money that I didn't even know I could get, like a Home Heating credit," says Connie Walton. " I learned a lot about ways I can save money."

Ms. Walton, (near right) a 30-year-old single mother of three from New Baltimore, is completing training to become a medical technician in order to better support her family.
